PSWL Wiffle Ball
2012 PSWL Teams
Purple Cobras
Record: 3-0
Coach: Matt Murrell
Roster: Matt Murrell, Jordan Alvarado, Billy Voight, Eric Steinmuller, Matt Sobel
Led by MVP candidate Jordan Alvarado, the Purple Cobras look to make a strong push for the 2012 PSWL Championship. Alvarado can get it done with both pitching and hitting, and he showed it by blasting a PSWL record 6 home runs in one day in 2011. Billy Voight will also be a key piece to the Cobra team. Although Voight can be dangerous at the plate, it's his pitching that may surprise many in 2012 as he is regarded as one of the fastest pitchers in PSWL. Murrell, Steinmuller, and rookie Matt Sobel can also provide occasional sparks and send one over the fence. Look out for the Purple Cobras in 2012.
Average Joes
Record: 0-3
Coach: Conor Donohue
Roster: Conor Donohue, Spencer Alvarado, Ricky Vandenberg, Steve Maffucci, Dan Nilsson
The Average Joes are a team full of potential. Coach Conor Donohue had a disappointing 2011 season, but he showed life in the playoffs when he blasted 6 home runs. Ricky Vandenberg also had a disappointing 2011 season, but the 2010 season proves he has the power to hit 15+ home runs. Spencer Alvarado is the Joe's only proven pitcher, and he can heavily contribute at bat as well. Rookies Steve Maffucci and Dan Nilsson have shown many signs of potential. Maffucci is an early favorite for Rookie of the Year. If the Joes can tap into that potential, they can be a very dangerous team in 2012.
The Mandimes
Record: 2-1
Coach: Liam Murphy
Roster: Liam Murphy, Tyler Lobenhofer, Kris Garr, Austin Marotto, Vinny Nguyen
The Mandimes are heavy favorites to win it all this year. They proved this by winning the 2nd Annual Pre-Season Spring Break Tournament, and going undefeated in that tournament. Every player on The Mandimes are not only a threat at the plate, but can also get it done on the mound. Austin Marotto is one of the fastest pitchers in PSWL, and led the league in strikeouts last season. Tyler Lobenhofer threw two perfect games in 2011, and both Murphy and Garr have displayed nasty pitches in the past. Rookie Vinny "Vinsanity" Nguyen is looking to take the league by storm. The Mandimes look to be the team to beat in the 2012 season.
Chafe & Jinkers
Record: 1-1
Coach: Matt Alaimo
Roster: Matt Alaimo, Mike Chave, Dylan Scarpinella, Taylor Ringold, Bryan Rosenthal
Please don't ask about the logo... I have no idea. A team name originated from an inside joke, the Chafe & Jinkers are the underdogs of 2012. While they look to be the most comical team, many experts were scratching their heads when the final roster selected by Matt Alaimo was announced. The Jinkers are going to have to rely on the bat of 1st-overall pick and self-proclaimed MVP Mike Chave to stay in the playoff hunt. Taylor Ringold had a major slump to start the 2011 season, but he's shown signs of improvement and potential heading into his sophmore year. Rookies Dylan Scarpinella and Bryan Rosenthal are not to be overlooked at the plate, and Rosenthal will spark the team as their starting pitcher. It'll be interesting to see what the Jinkers can do in 2012.
Team YOWO
Record: 1-2
Coach: Frank Turrito
Roster: Frank Turrito, Mike Quinn, Saverio Curcio, Andrew Rubasch, Chris Alaimo
"You Only Wiffle Once". Knocking the popular term "YOLO", Team YOWO is determined to make a strong push in 2012. Mike Quinn has been one of PSWL's most dominant pitchers since the 2010 season, as well as a major home run threat at the plate. Saverio Curcio had a very strong rookie season in 2011, and looks to continue that success into his sophmore season. Turrito, Alaimo, and rookie Andrew Rubasch can all find a way on base and can also provide some pop at the plate as well. Team YOWO is going to be a tough team to beat this season.
Team Makeshift
Record: 1-1
Coach: Danny Graziosi
Roster: Danny Graziosi, Erik Ponce, Joe Kaehne
Team Makeshift is still a mystery going into the 2012 season. While their roster isn't fully set, their current roster can make some noise in 2012. Rookies Danny Graziosi and Erik Ponce athleticism will translate well on the wiffle ball field, and Joe Kaehne is no stranger to the league. Kaehne has shown in the past he can be a threat at the plate. We'll see where the Makeshifts go, but their current players can definitely win games.
